Work Planning Steps
Communication takes place between minimum two people and in face to face communication, this period usually occurs both listening and answering to each other. In this project I want onlookers to be part of the project forwarding their message and communicate with people whom they may have not seen or met before. So, one sided communication will start. Each of the words or sentences they write will be recorded in the project’s brain – something like notebook, a long band of paper-. And at the end of the project, what I have will be some expressionist messages from people that I don’t know, one sided communication then finishes. So yes they will see you, what you write, what you say but relax, they won’t know also who writes what, you may tell your secret, revile against anything, you can be free, no need to hesitate.
Where will I say?
I will say this message in an ordinary small coffee shop, in Galata.
To whom will I say?
To people, who just past there to buy coffee, or to order and drink coffee, having some time to go through any reading or visual material.
What are the conditions of the place?
The place is inside, so the conditions will be quite good for the material I am thinking to work with.
How will I exhibit my work?
It can stand so I will put it on a shelf, which is passed by all coming and leaving customers.
How can I improve my technique by considering these conditions?
What others think?
Onlookers’ Reactions- Comments- Toughts
Sami:
I thought the paper is can be torn and put on the cables. What I think about the message is there is a information pollution, everybody is talking about something.
Şehriban:
There is a consumption craziness and also verbosity.
Nisa:
By this work,a lot of people’s ideas will be collected in one thing. It would be beter if it was more colorfull.

It seems that it is for storing your thoughts.
Merve:
At first sight it reminds me first cinema machines. It is like a life, that peoples’ thoughts and feelings are gathered together and mixed each other. Different ideas combine and it is nice, vintage. I like the idea, visuality, but i didn’t get the meaning of cables. I like newspaper usage. Cables could be used to represent delivering, you are delivering your ideas by them. I like circle cutting of papers. So the whole work could be about communication.
It can stand so I will put it on a shelf, which is passed by all coming and leaving customers.
How can I improve my technique by considering these conditions?
I want my work to be interactive. That’s why I chose this expression way of communication. But this also brings about the risk of damaging the materials like falling down, being torn, separated.
Letting the viewers to look and also be part of it by writing, I have to fix it well, durable. I used strong glues to prevent from falling down. I could also use spray varnish to make it more strong and durable.

It seems like a time machine to rewind. It could be said like it is recording, storing in memory, written memory. It gives archive feeling. It could be done more colorfull or white cable could be used.
Vesma:
It is nice, usefull, modern like Andy Warhol, it is like memocard, It could be good if clipsing the paper notes on the cables were available.
Silvia:

Rebecca:
It is like fishskin. It seem like a fihs in poluted place. All of the light are mixed together like a complex city.
Nuha:
There is a deep idea inside. Circle cut papers remind me sea. It is like viewing with telescopium focusing lots of things, there are different dimensions. The work seems like film cassettes. It is like everybody’s something are getting together like a film.
Doug: Our world made up of diverse people and can be seen differently. I like that the two face are different each other. Everybody is different, there is no one true answer.
Evaluation of the Project
After decision point, I tried to figure out how that kind of mechanism could work and I did sketch for the face I will work on it. I made some sketches for also mechanism and on that way the Project is also shaped. I tried first like photo machine mechanism for Rolling up the film. I punch the paper and with the help of spin it worked. But there was a problem, it attached sometimes and that makes the paper not roll. Also the punched holes maket he paper smaller. Then I agree on the last version of the mechanism. It was easier to write for onlookers and also roll the paper on other cylinder.
After I decided mechanism, I began to prepare faces. I cut 5 mm photoblogs and covered it with newspaper. I punched circle shaped newspapers and separate them in terms of their blackness or whiteness. Then I glued them one on the top of the other according to their monochrome color to make the feeling of face. I attached newspaper as eyewinker and cable for lip.
When both part of the faces are finished, it was ready to put the mechanism on it. So I fixed two faces and between them the mechanism on a wooden plate to stand up. I put some cables as hair. I didn’t put a lor of hair because it would make the system to complicated and difficult to roll the paper. So just for representative I put a few. It was also like thinking sparks. I used screw for rolling the paper so the onlooker would roll the screw which is also near the brain. There is a metaphoric usage of screw like scratching about, penetration to mind.
They liked also the interactivity to be part of it. It seemed like a game. Their reaction was different from each of them, each of them liked different part of the Project. But there were also some agreements. They liked the work, by its visuality and also function (yes interestingly they said that it is a functional thing, usefull), newspaper usage and also cables were interesting for them. It was a surprising box to find out what happens there. So I take positive reactions to work. But for the message they understand there was some controversial points. Some misunderstanding was about the materials I used, newspaper and slip roll. Some of the people make connection with politics and information with newspapers of course it is not surprising if we think about why newspaper presents. I used for writing place a slip roll and one of the people, because she is also working as shopkeeper made connection it with spending like unnecessary huge expenses. People cared about the punched paper’s shape, circle and they gave meaning to that too like focusing life, people, what happens. But mainly they got the idea of communication and collection of unknown people’s toughts and feelings. Some found it like a film, some like a real life.

Black Box
is..
the undefined, unknown part of us, in our mind,
we record the moments,
our surroundings,
our feelings;
sorrow, love, excitements, fears,
anything we realize or not,
any place we have been to or imagined or not,
and when we let our mind be free, relax and tell what affects us,
in which way,
what we love to do, what we are afraid of, what we are looking for,
or just tell stories, make us watch our movie,
every night,
or everytime we close our eyes to go under,
behind the curtain,
obverse of the medallion,
deeper inside,
there is the blackbox,
just in our dreams..
I have a dream of..

Cut Across the News
I have developed a technique that I called “Cut Across” and using this technique I named my work “Cut Across the News”. I can say for the technique as it is a contemporary technique. I have used for this technique newspapers and cables from inside the computer. I have done abstract pieces of work.
Discussion about Background of Technique
Threshold Matter
Newspapers and also computers, separately cables are tools used for communication in our daily lives. Especially including both pictures and writings, newspapers were the best media until other types of medium like radio, tv, and nowadays pc, took place for sharing the news to public, a publicity technique used for nearly 400 years. “Just one day” is estimated life for newspaper’s real meaning of being. After the day they are published, their lives come to an end for publicity, then their second lives start, for to be used in other purposes, wrapping, bagging, covering, cleaning the windows, using as tablecloth, etc. But then there becomes no importance what is printed on, like pictures, letters. The less they have them on, the more useful and cleaner they are. After excluding what all those pictures and words’ meaning what lefts behind? It is like looking a newspaper written in foreign language, foreign places and people or objects on it. Estrange them all and a fresh looking. This is what I like about the newspapers. They are not just newspapers but they are like wallpapers, decorated with pictures and words that I can look them without trying to understand, searching for meanings. Words are not words anymore, and pictures are not pictures. Just a very-well decorated paper, a bit old, a bit like a second hand, sometimes wrinkled but always a living paper, not like 0km, white smooth papers.
Introduction to Work
Considering the points I have mentioned above, I have decided on newspapers as my first and leading role player. I have given them the role, that we don’t get used to, that they are not published, produced for. My technique then should be depend on not to use them like newspapers. My attitude to them, the newspapers, like the papers as I explained before, decorated papers.
Materials and how they are applied
In some of my workings I cut them in small pieces very thin like fringe also not to lead them to be read and I stick them on paper in a random way to make dense and rare parts, scattered to make viewer to focus on the form rather than to think about the material. The cut and glued newspapers are like short hairs, fringes to make it both 3d and also to use the light effect, and to give a volume. In also some of my works, I make some thin cut newspapers to be in shape like “o” for increasing the volume and by aligning them succession of each other near the cable, trying to give the feeling of continuity with the getting form. Also under light, this kind of work shows you like other face, with changing the direction of light, the effects also are changed.
Except from the small hair type of cutting technique, I also try to use some geometric cut shapes. By using regular geometry like triangle, I tried to see the effect of shapes and the volumes of these shapes if they are like tiers. I cut many of triangles and put them together by glue to arrange like topography. This time, for this part of work I want to take attraction to shape and volume and also arrangement. They are not stable but they are like moving, or just a second ago moved.
In one of my works I used punched papers in circle shape and I draw with those papers make some part of the drawing rare and dense. I didn’t find the result satisfactory as I imagine in my mind. I got cable through the hole I’ve done with cut and stick paper like “Ω” shape. That was another possible way of using paper.
In two mf my works I use cable in 3d. One of them using cables as just small arcs I tried to make shadows successive to each other. The last work I cut the cables in smaller size, to see if I install them like in this size how the effect will be like. I also use cable 3d in that work. I stick the cables as they can stand on the paper. It should be more tried to check what can be done more.
For my backgrounds I usually use paper, A4 and mostly A3 sized papers some are them in color. I like white background for my black cable drawings, but I also like using especially black background to make more contrast between the paper and the cables or newspaper pictures or typography color. Moreover, grey and pink background papers are used to see the background color effect.
Materials and how they are applied
I also use cables in my works in a way that showing them not as they are cables. I want viewer even not try to think about or wonder what materials they are. I just want to use materials with their being, their frame, form. I like their simplicity; even they have a tough job. I find them so esthetical sided by the newspaper, and also on paper background. They have remarkable colors and I like the contrast they make with ground and also I believe that newspapers and cables complete each other both in esthetical way and also according to their material types, one being so susceptible while the other is so durable, not easy to cut off.
In conclusion, after looking the finished work, arrived point of the resulted form, trying to use newspaper and cable in a different way from their “real job”, there becomes of explaining feeling in an abstract approach. So the output is nothing as representative but letting viewers to sense it in their way of understanding.
Difficulties faced while applying the technique
First of all as I mentioned papers are very sensitive materials. They can easily be torn or get wet. So it’s better to find a way to make the paper stronger after work is finished. It is also not easy to work with cables, especially to shape them as I want while sticking mostly. Cables are not so elastic to shape. I couldn’t find a way not to leave any sticker or adhesive residual on the paper. Also for more 3d works it would be better to use not paper but harder material as a background.
What else could be tried with the technique?
This technique can also be used on hard backgrounds like plaque, plate or wood. The technique can be used for relief picturing. With using more and longer cables, and also sometimes, without any materials, just using cables can also give interesting effects and shape esthetical forms. Installing with light, the technique would be more attractive and changeable by light angle, which also could make the work alive, living the day in and according to time.
Using newspaper and cable, it would be difficult to work on realistic drawings. They are more suitable to take part in an abstract works. Also the difficulties that I have faced are some important points to explain why this technique cannot be used like in technical drawing or for illustration in a book.
